Amitabh Bachchan is one of India’s most accomplished actors. Having been in the business for more than thirty years, he is immensely popular. He has starred in some of the biggest hits in Indian cinema.
Amitabh Bachchan’s first real claim to fame was the 1973 movie, Zanjeer. This and other hugely popular movies like Deewaar (1975) cemented his place as an action hero. His image came to be known as the “angry young man” of Indian cinema. He has starred in one of India’s most successful movies ever, Sholay. However he is not limited to action flicks alone. He has acted in comedies like Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) and romantic films like Kabhie Kabhie (1976).
Amitabh Bachchan’s recent popularity has much to do with his appearance in Kaun Banega Crorepati, an Indian adaptation of the British game show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? He has since acted in a number of films, some also starring his son, Abhishek Bachchan. Recent movies like Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Baghban (2003) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) have been very successful.
Amitabh Bachchan has won the national Award thrice. The most recent was for the widely acclaimed movie, Black (2005) in which he was declared Best Actor. In this movie, he played the role of a teacher obsessed with teaching his blind student. He also won the Filmfare best Actor Award in 2006 for this performance. He has been awarded India’s prestigious civilian awards, the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, in recognition of his achievements.
